Do you make these mistakes when trying to clean cat urine from carpet?

Using baking soda or a product containing baking soda. Have you ever seen a large box of baking soda labeled, Pet Odor & Stain Remover, on the self with other pet odor removers?

Using vinegar as a pet stain and odor remover. Again, have you ever seen a large bottle of vinegar labeled as a Pet Stain & Odor Remover, on the self with other pet odor removers?

Both baking soda (base) and vinegar (acid) will change the pH balance within your carpet and will make the bacterial or enzyme cleaners less effect. If you have used baking soda or vinegar, you will need to treat each area multiple times in order to neutralize the pH imbalanced caused by the baking soda or vinegar.

Have you used a spray type urine odor remover and sprayed the surface of the carpet? Did you know that most of the urine has soaked into the carpet padding and sub-floor. So when you used the spray type odor remover, it may have just treated the carpet surface.

Ready-to-use bacterial or enzyme cleaners have a relatively short shelf life, as little as three months, depending on the formulation.

Because ready-to-use odor removers are diluted with water, they require the use of preservatives, and many companies use harsh chemicals like propylene glycol, a skin and eye irritant, and other neurotoxic glycol ethers such as butyl cellosolve.

But you can avoid harsh preservatives to a certain degree by purchasing bacterial concentrates, which, because of their lower water content, require fewer preservatives and a shelf life of several years.

Cleaning Carpet of Cat or Dog Urine Odor and Stains

For those of you who didn't know, both male and female cats spray, secondly, male cats do squat when urinating on floors. Male dogs, obviously, lift their legs to urinate. But, they also squat too. Don't worry, I'll be getting to my point on why this is important.

When a cat squats to pee, because he's so close the carpet, the urine stain is about the size of a quarter. Most of the urine has penetrated down into the padding and sub-floor. The same applies to dogs when they urinate on the carpet.

Lets assume you have one cat, and the cat urinated just once on the carpet. If you use a black light to find the urine stain, you'll see a glowing spot about the size of a quarter.

Cats tend to use the same areas when urinating. So if you see urine stains 3-6 inches around, your cat had urinated in that area multiple, multiple times. Now you have a serious odor problem, the urine has spread below the carpet in an circular area about 1-2 feet wide.

So do you think by using baking soda, vinegar, or a spay on pet odor remover on the urine stain you see on top of the carpet will solve the urine odor problem? Wrong!

To remove urine odor from carpet, the pet odor remover must penetrate all 3 layers of your flooring: carpet fibers, carpet padding, and into the sub-floor (concrete or wood). This is the only way you can remove urine from your carpet.

So how do you eliminate urine odors so imbedded in your carpet?

With a little patience and a high grade, commercial grade bacterial concentrate. The concentrate needs to be diluted with water at a ratio of about 1:10 (one part concentrate to 10 parts water)

Because you don't know if that 6 inch spot was cause by your cat urinating 10 or 100 times in the same area, its a good idea to treat the area 3-4 times with a bacterial concentrate.

Sound simple? Believe it or not it can be easy if you choose the right product and are willing to treat each area 3-4 times. You need to pour about 1-2 cups of pre-mix bacterial concentrate on each area. Repeat the application in about 24-48 hours. Make sure you treat each area at least 3 times.

To prevent recurring urine stain accidents you have to completely eliminate the urine odor from the pet's perspective. When we think we have cleaned the cat urine and removed the smell completely, the pet may still smell the residual urine odor. To prevent your pet from staining the same area again, treat the area 3-4 times to ensure you have removed all traces of urine.
